Your Perfect Daycation In Monticello, MN!

1. Moon Donuts & Cafe

📍 505 State HWY 25, Monticello, MN

Who doesn’t like to start a vacation day with a sweet treat? Moon Donuts & Cafe was our first stop, and I was very excited about it. Right as I walked in, I was greeted by a case full of beautiful, scrumptious-looking donuts and a sign that read #YOUDESERVEADONUT. Don’t believe me? I’ve got pictures to prove it!

Alongside donuts, they also offer a variety of breakfast sandwiches, lunch sandwiches, and beverages. I ordered a “Fancy Donut” (that’s how it was listed on my receipt) a Maple Bacon Long John and found a table to sit at. It was fresh, delicious, and very satisfying. A great way to start the day.

🍽️ Tip: The earlier you go, the more donut options you’ll have to choose from.

 2. Enzo’s Wonderland — Women-Owned Book, Plant, Game & Puzzle Store

📍 141 Broadway St E Suite 5, Monticello, MN 55362

Next up: Enzo’s Wonderland, a women-owned book, plant, game, and puzzle store. I had no idea what to expect, but the moment I walked in, I knew this was a special place. You can feel the appreciation for books from the very first step inside.

Everything was meticulously placed, yet the space felt incredibly welcoming and cozy. The owner shared that people sometimes come in just to hang out for hours, and she also mentioned that if there’s ever a book I want, she’d be happy to order it for me.

There were books of all genres and for all ages, along with really cool puzzles and tons of giftable items. Even my preteen son who doesn’t love reading quite as much as I do added several things to his holiday wish list while we were there. I hesitate to call it a store; it feels much more like an experience, or a true “third place.”

We were the only ones in during our visit, but I hope this place continues to get all the business it deserves. I will absolutely be back.

2.  River City Extreme — Entertainment Center

📍 3875 School Blvd, Monticello, MN 55362

River City Extreme is a jam-packed entertainment center featuring over thirty bowling lanes, a laser tag arena, an arcade, and a sports bar. We went with the intention of eating lunch, and while we’ve eaten here before, both visits left me feeling a little unsure about returning specifically for the food.

The first time, I chalked it up to a busy day and a large group. This time, while we were still a larger group, we appeared to be the only ones dining at the moment (we called ahead), and the experience just didn’t go as smoothly as I would expect for a venue that regularly hosts weddings and events.

That said, this place absolutely does entertainment right. Even without bowling, I was drawn in by the energy, lighting, and overall ambiance. The arcade is easy to get lost in, and we also discovered a billiards area that we really enjoyed. I’ll definitely be back just likely for the fun rather than the food.🍽️ Tip: If you’re visiting during the week, note that they typically don’t open until after 4 PM. Weekends offer extended hours.

4. SeashellsbyShelly — Rock & Crystal Shop

📍 2625 County Rd 37 NE, Monticello, MN 55362

Located in an unassuming house, SeashellsbyShelly Rock & Crystal Shop features over 2,000 square feet filled with crystals, agates, stone carvings, fossils, jewelry, fluorescent minerals, and even a long-wave/short-wave dark room for viewing fluorescent pieces.

We walked into the first room and it felt quaint, but once we entered the next space, it seemed like it went on forever. There were so many stunning crystals and unique pieces to choose from. The staff was incredibly helpful and eager to assist.

At one point, I mentioned how overwhelmed I felt by all the options, and they immediately offered to help me narrow things down or find a specific crystal within my price range.💎 Tip: If you’re searching for something specific, don’t hesitate to ask for help. They’re also very active on Facebook and frequently host live sales showcasing their inventory.

5. Nordic Taphouse — The Classiest Dive Bar in Minnesota

📍 106 Walnut St, Monticello, MN 55362

The Nordic Taphouse describes itself as “the classiest dive bar in Minnesota, where a warm, welcoming atmosphere meets top-notch drinks.” They offer a great selection of domestic and craft beers, signature cocktails, and delicious food from their kitchen.

This was such a great place to end the night. It all starts with the stunning mural on the exterior wall, featuring howling wolves, swans, Split Rock Lighthouse, waves, and the Northern Lights. I later learned the mural was partially funded by MontiArts and the Central Minnesota Arts Board—both of which have done incredible work supporting the local arts community. If you’re interested in exploring more, I highly recommend checking out MontiArts and Monticello’s chalk art festival, Let’s Chalk!

Inside, you’re greeted by a sign that says “Please Seat Yourself,” and we happily did just that. It was a bustling place when we arrived, and while there wasn’t space downstairs, we found one of the last available tables upstairs. Despite the crowd, the atmosphere felt intimate, special, and full of community energy. Families, couples, and friend groups all shared the space, and the Nordic-inspired ambiance felt perfectly curated.

I really appreciated the menu, too. It struck the perfect balance between classic taphouse fare and elevated twists. It was easy to find kid-friendly options alongside more adventurous choices. My son ordered the kids’ mac & cheese, which came with pub fries and Oreos and to my delight, it was their homemade beer cheese mac & cheese, not the boxed kind you often see on kids’ menus. He absolutely smashed it and only gave me one bite. The kids’ meal was just $7, which felt like a steal.

I ordered the Buffalo Pub Fries, house fries topped with buffalo-seasoned chicken, green onions, and jalapeño ranch and proudly joined the clean plate club. No complaints here.🍻

Tip: They offer two happy hours every day: 2–5 PM and 9 PM–close.

Final Thoughts

What I loved most about this Monticello daycation is how effortless yet memorable it felt. Each stop had its own personality, and together they created a day that felt full without being overwhelming. It’s the kind of trip where you can support locally owned businesses, feel genuinely welcomed, and still enjoy great food, fun activities, and unique finds.

Monticello proves that you don’t have to travel far or spend a lot to experience something special. Whether you follow this itinerary exactly or use it as inspiration to build your own day trip, this charming town makes an ideal escape for families, couples, and solo adventurers alike. I’ll definitely be back, and I hope this guide helps you plan a day that’s just as enjoyable as ours was.
