For When You’re Ready to Wolf Out of Hibernation 🐺🌴
Want that tropical vacation feeling while it’s still gray and murky outside? The water park at Great Wolf Lodge is a cozy 84 degrees, and when you’re sipping a poolside margarita, you might just forget you’re still in Minnesota, Dorothy.
This is one of my favorite family daycation or overnight-reset spots for winter, early spring, or anytime cabin fever hits hard.
Why This Daycation Works So Well for Families
💰 Affordability (aka: You Control the Budget)
This is one of those trips where you can truly spend as much or as little as you want.
When you book a room, you typically receive up to 6 FREE water park passes with your stay. Individually, those passes usually cost around $55 per person, so no matter which room you choose, that’s some serious built-in savings right away.
Parking is an added cost, but beyond that, everything else is optional, which makes this a great customizable daycation.
How to Enjoy the Resort Without Overspending
🍿 Bring Your Own Food & Snacks
Each room includes a mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker, so I always recommend packing your own snacks and drinks.
Disclosure: I only recommend products I would use myself. This post may contain affiliate links, and I may earn a small commission if you purchase through these links.
Family favorites:
- Capri Suns or juice boxes
- Popcorn & pretzels (my son raves about these pretzels!) and other snacks (These are gluten-free!)!
- Cup noodles or easy microwave meals
- Breakfast items to skip resort pricing
Bringing your own beverages alone can save a surprising amount.
🪄 MagiQuest: Pro Tips to Save Big
MagiQuest can be fun, but it can also add up fast if you’re not careful.
- Bring your own wand if you’ve used MagiQuest before many families reuse the same wand over multiple stays.
- Consider buying one game for the whole family instead of one per kid. It can actually create more shared memories (and less kids sprinting in opposite directions).
- Some families even suggest purchasing cheaper wands that won’t actually be connected to the MagiQuest game for the kiddos who won’t be running the main wand to let them enjoy the process with everyone without the additional cost.
- Heads up: many families don’t even finish the game during their stay some say it takes two full days.
Bonus: Great Wolf Lodge often offers FREE family activities, like: Dance parties, Storytime, Crafts, Character meet and greets.

🧸 Build-A-Bear Without the Sticker Shock
Some kids love the Build-A-Bear Workshop on-site. A money-saving trick I’ve noticed parents using is to bring a bear your kid already owns and let them pick out new clothes or accessories only. Same excitement, much lower cost.
When It Does Make Sense to Spend the Money
🎟️ Activity Passes (Wolf, Paw, or Pup)
If your family wants to do ALL the things, the activity passes can be worth it.
The Wolf Pass (currently around $69.99) includes:
- One MagiQuest game for your entire stay
- One MagiQuest wand, mod, or belt
- Three Northern Lights Arcade games (excluding VR)
- Howler’s Peak Ropes Course (one admission)
- Rustic Ridge Climbing Wall (double climb)
- One game at Ten Paw Alley
- Candy Cup from Great Wolf Candy Co.
- Kids ice cream from Wood’s End Creamery
If you were planning to do most of these anyway, the pass usually saves you a bit of money.
🍽️ Dining Passes
Dining passes can also be a good option for families who don’t want to bring meals or cook at all during their stay.
Flexibility = A Huge Win for Families
One of my favorite things about Great Wolf Lodge is how flexible it is:
- You can often arrive early, change in the locker rooms, and start enjoying the water park before check-in. Call before to confirm they will allow this.
- On departure day, you can check out of your room and keep using the water park until closing time on your departure date.
- Having a private room is clutch for families with littles who need naps, breaks, or just a quiet moment away from the chaos.
And if you want to extend your daycation into a full staycation, the Mall of America is right across the street which makes the Bloomington location especially convenient.
Room Pick: My Favorite Option
The Deluxe Bunk Bed Suite is my top choice for families.
Why I love it:
- Fun Northwoods lodge theme
- Bunk beds (a huge hit for kids who don’t have them at home)
- Queen bed + full-size sleeper sofa
- Built-in separation for kids who need their own space

Things That Can Make Your Stay Easier
Optional items parents like to bring, not required, just helpful.
- Refillable water bottles (free water & ice at soda machines)
- Bathrobes (it’s cold after leaving the water park)
- Bubble wands or glow sticks (avoid the expensive souvenir version)
- Waterproof phone pouch (neck-style works great), I would never go without bringing one!
- Foldable step stool (for littles at the sink)
- Folding drying rack for swimsuits
- Wolf-themed souvenirs (skip the gift shop markup). These wolf party favors look so cool!
- Sharpie (label cups/bottles, clothing). This Permanent Laundry Marker should live in your luggage so you never forget it on vacation again!
- Paper plates
- Ear plugs
- Full-size lotion (chlorine is SO drying)
- Potty seat (if needed)
- Crocs or flip flops
- Closed-toe shoes (required for ropes course & climbing wall)
- Small screwdriver (for battery swaps)
- Wet bag for swimsuits
- Night light LOVE that this one is also a white noise machine! Great for hotels!
Good to Know Before You Go
- All Great Wolf Lodge resorts are cashless
- You can link your debit/credit card to your wristband
- Download and use the Great Wolf Lodge app
- They provide life jackets
- Sipper cups offer free refills, but reuse rules vary by location
Final Take
Whether you go all-in or keep it budget-friendly, Great Wolf Lodge is one of those rare spots where a daycation truly feels like a vacation, especially when winter refuses to quit.
If you want to wolf out of hibernation without hopping on a plane, this one’s hard to beat.
